The Best Way to Develop The PTE Cause and Effect Essay Writing task

Updated: May 30, 2023

The PTE Cause and Effect Essay Writing task requires you to write a short essay in response to a given statement or prompt. In this type of essay, you need to identify and explain the causes and/or effects of a particular phenomenon or event. You should aim to clearly and logically present your analysis, while using appropriate transition words and phrases to connect your ideas.

Here are some sample prompts for the PTE Cause and Effect Essay Writing task:

"What are the effects of pollution on the environment?"

  • "What are the causes of stress among university students?"

  • "How does social media influence our interpersonal relationships?"

  • "What are the effects of climate change on the global economy?"

  • "What are the causes and effects of obesity?"

The typical structure of a cause and effect essay includes an introduction, one or more body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You should aim to present your analysis in a clear and logical manner, and ensure that each paragraph is linked to the previous one. Here is a suggested paragraph arrangement:

  • Introduction: Provide background information on the topic, identify the phenomenon or event you will analyze, and state your thesis statement.

  • Body Paragraph 1: Identify and explain the causes of the phenomenon or event, and provide evidence to support your analysis.

  • Body Paragraph 2: Identify and explain the effects of the phenomenon or event, and provide evidence to support your analysis.

  • (Optional) Body Paragraph 3: If needed, present additional causes or effects of the phenomenon or event, and provide evidence to support your analysis.

  • Conclusion: Summarize your main analysis, restate your thesis, and provide a concluding thought or call to action.

Here is a possible sentence-by-sentence development of the introduction paragraph:

  • Sentence 1: Start with a general statement or background information on the topic to introduce it to the reader.

  • Sentence 2: Identify the phenomenon or event you will analyze, and provide more specific context.

  • Sentence 3: State your thesis statement, which presents your analysis of the causes and/or effects of the phenomenon or event.

Here is a possible sentence-by-sentence development of the first body paragraph:

  • Sentence 1: Start with a topic sentence that identifies and explains the first cause of the phenomenon or event.

  • Sentence 2: Provide supporting evidence for your analysis, such as a statistic, expert opinion, or example.

  • Sentence 3: Explain how the evidence supports your analysis.

  • Sentence 4: Use appropriate transition words and phrases to connect your ideas and maintain coherence.

  • Sentence 5: Conclude the paragraph and transition to the next one.

Here is a possible sentence-by-sentence development of the second body paragraph:

  • Sentence 1: Start with a topic sentence that identifies and explains the first effect of the phenomenon or event.

Here is a possible sentence-by-sentence development of the conclusion paragraph:

  • Sentence 1: Summarize the main analysis you presented in your essay.

  • Sentence 2: Restate your thesis statement, using different wording than in the introduction.

  • Sentence 3: Provide a concluding thought or call to action that relates to the topic or the analysis you presented.
